Hydroxyapatite - an established active ingredient in modern dental care

The renowned specialist book “Toothpastes” summarizes numerous interesting studies and findings on hydroxyapatite in dental care.

Hydroxyapatite was used and tested in dental care products in Germany as early as the 1980s. This nature-inspired active ingredient has been used in Asian countries since the 80s. A clinical study was able to show the effectiveness in the treatment of caries. It is also described that hydroxyapatite can remineralize initial caries lesions. The biomimetic agent can be used in toothpastes as well as in mouthwashes and has also been shown to be particularly effective in the repair of initial lesions.

The mechanism of action is described here as follows:

  1. Hydroxyapatite is deposited on the surface of the tooth enamel.

  2. After the attachment, it penetrates the tooth enamel up to the initial lesion and fills the smallest tooth enamel defects directly.

  3. Remineralization is achieved through the deposition of hydroxyapatite in the natural tooth enamel structure.
