Review article on different calcium phosphates in dental care

This current review article summarizes all known studies on different calcium phosphate compounds that are used in dental care. This work is based exclusively on in vivo and in situ studies. Studies on seven different calcium phosphate compounds were combined: tricalcium phosphate, brushite, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), calcium phosphosilicate, calcium glycerophosphate and hydroxyapatite.

In particular, amorphous calcium phosphates and hydroxyapatite are well-studied biomimetic ingredients in dental care products. The studies show that remineralization is accelerated, but that interaction with microorganisms can also take place. Amorphous calcium phosphates and especially hydroxyapatite thus offer biomimetic alternatives (to fluorides) for caries prophylaxis and are equally suitable as active ingredients for maintaining gum health. The international team of authors concludes that calcium phosphates are particularly suitable for children and people with hyposalivation ("xerostomia").
